Deep Tissue Massage

What is a Deep Tissue Massage?

This massage technique is designed to target muscles and connective tissue. Clients find it particularly useful for areas that become stiff, such as neck and shoulders, lower back or the muscles on the back of the legs.

It is based on similar techniques to a “standard” massage but the pressure is stronger at times and may be more focussed on problem areas.

How Does it Work?

Many people have bands of tight tissue in their muscles or surrounding structures. These can be caused by ongoing tension, such as from postural problems, or an injury. These tight areas can restrict circulation and cause pain and limited movement.

Deep tissue massage therapy can break down these areas of tightness, enabling muscles to move more freely.

Does it Hurt?

Most people find there is usually some pain at some points in the massage. A skilled massage therapist will be able to adapt their technique to a point where the massage is not too uncomfortable but still offers a benefit.

Sometimes there is some pain after the massage as the inflammation around the tissue settles down.

What Can it Treat?

This type of massage can be used to help with many issues, including these:

  • Pain, including lower back pain and neck and shoulder pain
  • Recovering from an injury
  • Postural problems
  • Muscle tension
  • Sciatica
  • Piriformis Syndrome
  • Recovering from a workout or athletic event
