Our silent discos in local care homes are part funded by North Somerset Council’s Physical Activity Fund. This is a lovely piece by BBC Points West screened on 9th March 2026 following our physio-led silent discos in care homes.
Research shows how effective music can be for wellbeing and memory recall, increasing activity levels and connecting with others, especially for those who live with dementia. The comfy headsets we use at Severn Community Therapy CIC work with hearing aids and are proving to be going down very well with our local care home residents. It’s so good to see the residents, their family members, staff and our therapists all having such a great time together, moving to the music and connecting with each other.
We offer popular playlists such as 50’s and 60’s rock and roll, 70’s sing along, and of course the requests! The music is truly bespoke to the residents who are taking part and so our discos are individualised and meaningful.
“Where are all the people?!! Bring the party to me!!” exclaimed a happy resident who tends to stay in her own room throughout the day. But when she tried the silent disco with a staff member in her room, she stood and danced with her son, and asked for others to join her!
We are making so many lovely memories for family members and staff, and helping them to connect with people who live with dementia who might normally struggle to find meaningful connections to others.
