Dementia Action Week!

Dementia Action Week runs from the 19th to 25th May. This week, spearheaded by Alzheimer’s UK, aims to support early diagnosis, and increase awareness of positive steps we can take to improve the lives of people with dementia.

How to talk to a loved one about their memory problems

We know that people often struggle to talk to loved ones about concerns they may have with their memory. However, it’s important that we find a way to talk about memory issues so that someone can get the right support they need. You know your loved one best. But here are some tips for raising the issue in as kind a way as possible…

  • Choose a time of day to talk when you know they’ll be at their most relaxed; make sure you have time to talk for as long as you need
  • Choose a space to talk that feels familiar to them, and is free from excessive noise, distractions
  • Try to use non-judgemental language; perhaps start the conversation with an open ended question to explore if they have any concerns about their memory
  • Show you are raising concerns because you care about them
  • Be prepared for a range of reactions – they may be anxious or confused, and it may take more than one conversation. However, they may have noticed some issues themselves and be relieved to have the chance to open up

Following this conversation, if the person agrees the next step would be to book an appointment with their GP to discuss their concerns further. If the person does not agree, you are still able to speak to the GP on their behalf. The GP would not be able to disclose any information about the person, but can listen to your concerns. It would then be up to the GP to decide what to do next.
