Funding has been approved for silent discos in care homes in North Somerset!
Our community interest company Severn Community Therapy CIC has been awarded its first round of funding from North Somerset Council Get Active Scheme! The physical activity fund is to ensure “every person has the opportunity to get moving, be active, and enjoy a healthier life in their local community”.
Cllr Jenna Ho-Marris executive member for health, said: “We’re a council which empowers and cares about people. We want to help people have more years enjoying good health and wellbeing through participation in physical activity”.
Severn Community Therapy CIC are so grateful for this money to enable our therapy team to provide 10 silent discos to North Somerset Care Homes before March 2026! The discos have so far shown how an immersive musical experience can benefit those in care homes especially people living with dementia. Reducing external distraction helps users to enjoy music, recall musical memories and build bonds with care staff and family members. Music incites movement and with our skilled therapists leading the discos we facilitate residents who are less able to move their bodies.
We have been running our discos prior to receiving this funding and residents, family members and staff have all given such positive feedback. The smiles are priceless and in some homes the staff felt residents were more active than usual even without a therapist leading the disco.
We will be posting lots of photos in the next few weeks of our North Somerset Council funded discos!
