Mobility, balance and falls issues are very common among older people. Ageing can cause a variety of problems affecting mobility and confidence with movement. Unfortunately a negative spiral can occur when people are fearful of falling so they move less, interact with other people less and become weaker and more isolated as a result.
Luckily physiotherapy and occupational therapy can help! Our bodies are designed to move little and often. This makes us feel good and enables us to take part in activities. After a holistic therapy assessment identifying the activities which are more difficult, your movement will be assessed. Realistic goals can be set to guide therapy sessions to ensure you are maximising your body and independence. This can improve your feeling of self worth, reduce pain, increase independence, dignity and reduce social isolation.
Some common ways therapy can help in later life:
Our treatment plan focusses on your goals and needs. We use a range of techniques to help you achieve your goals. Many of our clients have multiple health conditions and complex needs, so we are happy to adapt our approach to what will suit you best.
The therapist will come to your home at a time that is convenient to you. A family member, carer or friend are welcome to be present.
We will start by asking you about your experience of your condition and a little about your medical history. It is important for us to know what you are hoping to get out of having therapy so goals are realistic and treatment is individualised.
We will look at how you currently move, checking your strength, balance and quality of movement.
The treatment given is specific to the goals you would like to achieve. We can include an exercise program, manual therapy, confidence building, equipment advice and much more. We often liaise with other health professionals with your consent to ensure you receive excellent person-centred care.
