Deciding whether to have surgery

Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy can be helpful both before and after your decision to have elective surgery. Alongside your NHS team we can support you with our decision making tools, up to date evidence base, and previous experience. we understand it is a big decision whether or not to have an operation. The reason to have surgery is usually to help reduce symptoms and enable you to have a better quality of life and a longer life. However there are risks and benefits to weight up in order to make the right choice.

Yes I would like to have surgery

After analysing the risks and benefits of having surgery versus not having surgery, you may decide to go ahead with the procedure.

In this case, we know that being as strong and fit as possible beforehand, will optimise your body and mind for the operation and your recovery journey. Being prepared for your return home with the correct equipment in place, and the right advice for exercise, will give you a head start for your recovery. Surgery is not just about the operation. Your recovery is as important in order to get back to the activities you previously enjoyed.

Your consultant and discharge team can liaise with our therapists directly with us to ensure seamless, person-centred care for you or your loved one before and after your operation.

No I will not have surgery

If you choose that surgery is not right for you, your NHS team and our therapists can support you to be as strong and fit as possible and to manage your symptoms. Many people do very well without having an operation and avoid the risks of anaesthetic, the procedure and a poor recovery. There are often other options to enable you to reduce your symptoms in order to do the activities you enjoy for longer without the risks of surgery. Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists are well placed to support you in this journey and having a goal oriented approach has been found to work well.

What to expect from a therapy assessment

The therapist will come to your home at a time that is convenient to you.

We will start by asking you about your experience of your condition and a little about your medical history. It is important for us to know what you are hoping to get out of having therapy so that we ensure your goals are realistic and our treatment is individualised.

We assess how you move, what limits your movement and see how you manage daily activities.

We analyse our findings and come up with a program of treatment which is tailored to your goals and current level of mobility.

There are lots of ways we can help you to prepare or recover from surgery, or avoid surgery. Please look at our blog posts to see examples of how we can work to help you.
