What to Expect from a Physiotherapy Assessment

Many people are unsure about what to expect from a Physiotherapy appointment. They may have only seen Physiotherapists on TV, or only briefly in hospital.

In this post, we will explain what to expect from your first Physiotherapy assessment, and how this will help you work towards your goals.

Before the Assessment

When you approach Severn Physiotherapy, we will chat through your needs to make sure Physiotherapy is the right treatment course for you. We may recommend that some people see their GP or another health professional before we visit them.

If Physiotherapy is for you, we will book in an assessment at a time that will suit you, with a Physio with the skill set to manage your needs. We will also ask you to complete a short form to tell us a bit more about your current problems and any background medical issues.

During the Assessment

Severn Physiotherapy is a mobile service, meaning we come to you! You are welcome to have a friend or family member with you if you would find that helpful. To find out more about the benefits of home visit Physiotherapy, click here.

Your Physio will start by talking with you about your concerns, as well as taking a detailed history of your current problem, medical history and medications. If it’s relevant, we can also chat about how you’re managing at home. We will ask you about your goals and what is important to you.

Following this, we will look at how you’re moving. Depending on what your concern is, we may look at the strength in your arms and legs, how you’re walking or how you’re managing certain tasks. The advantage of being seen at home is that we can see how you manage in your home environment.

To be able to see clearly any issues, it may be necessary to remove certain items of clothing. This will always be kept to a minimum and we will ensure your dignity throughout the process.

After the Assessment

Following the assessment, we will develop a treatment plan with you that addresses your goals and concerns.
