World Continence Week 2020

World Continence Week 2020 – The World Federation of Incontinence and Pelvic Problems

We are currently in World Continence Week #WCW2020 with the aim of raising awareness of continence issues across the globe, improving health, wellness, quality of life and a multidisciplinary approach to treatment. The The World Federation of Incontinence and Pelvic Problems has lots of useful information for anyone to find out more about continence issues for all ages: https://sneakpeekwcw20.org/

Many women and men do not discuss continence problems with their GP or even with family and friends. The taboo makes it a much bigger problem than it should be. Incontinence is often very treatable!

Continence can affect males and females of all ages, and it is one of the biggest reasons for hospital admissions in later life.

Physiotherapists can help assess for continence problems even without an internal assessment. As part of the comprehensive geriatric assessment process and all of our assessments for people who are at risk of falling over we discuss continence. We know what questions to ask, and to ask them sensitively allowing a safe space for people to talk openly, sometimes for the first time, about continence. We understand that this can be a very challenging topic to discuss for men and women and that it can have a massive impact on your daily (and nightly) life and routines.

Community rehabilitation physio’s like us at Severn Physiotherapy can refer on to continence specialists such as pelvic health physiotherapists or your GP for further advice or tests.

Continence issues are not normal but they are extremely common and are often very treatable, please do talk to your physio, nurse, GP, midwife or other healthcare professional if you think you have symptoms.
