Your pelvic floor muscles sit like a hammock along the bottom of your pelvis. These muscles should be firm and springy, able to move up and down. In women, these muscles have three holes in to allow the passage of the urethra, vagina and anus.

They have several key roles including:

  • Supporting the organs that lie above, including the bladder and uterus
  • Allowing us control over our bowel and bladder
  • Contributing to sexual sensation and arousal
  • During pregnancy, these muscles provide support for the baby and assist during labour
  • Working with other muscles, the pelvic floor supports the spine

If you would like to learn more about how we can support your pelvic floor function, have a look at the Women’s Health section of our website or get in touch to talk about your needs.
